A lot of great studios were in houses - Rudy Van Gelder who recorded all the Blue Note and Impulse jazz records was setup in his house as well as Motown and United Sound Studios, Funkadelic. Aretha Franklin, John Lee Hooker, etc., were both just large houses in Detroit. John Lennon's Imagine was recorded in his home studio.
